Firefighter's daughter makes it through lightning round of TV's 'American Idol'

The daughter of a Carson City firefighter made it through the lightning round episode of "American Idol" on Tuesday night.

Amanda Avila, 23, daughter of Capt. Bob Schreihans, continues in the competition on one of America's top-rated television programs.

A native of Los Angeles, Avila attended the Los Angeles School of performing arts. Schreihans said as his daughter was growing up, she'd spend her summers in Carson City.

She currently works as a "siren" for Treasure Island Hotel Casino in Las Vegas. During the Las Vegas auditions of "American Idol" last summer, Avila got a unanimous decision for her rendition of Jessica Simpson's "I Wanna Love You Forever" from judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson and guest judge Kenny Loggins.

During Tuesday night's show, Avila was shown twice, and a portion of her performance was broadcast on the Fox network program. On Wednesday, she was shown briefly in the beginning of the show, but her status in the competition is unknown. She was one of about 104 singers out of 200 to make it past the first night of Hollywood auditions.

The goal is to make it into the top 24 and audition during the live broadcasts scheduled in the coming weeks.
