Feline foster families needed as volunteers in Carson City

Print Comment

The Wylie Animal Rescue Foundation is putting out a plea for feline foster homes.

"We're just drowning here with cats and kittens," said volunteer Karen Chaloub.

The nonprofit WARF is a group of volunteers dedicated to rescuing companion animals in imminent danger of euthanasia. The group's focus is dogs, cats and rabbits, and the need for foster homes in Carson City is great, Chaloub said.

Volunteers must be committed to keeping kittens until they reach adoption age, usually eight weeks old. The kittens will then be placed for adoption at Petco in Douglas County where volunteers also man the booth.

"This time of year it's hard because there are so many kittens and mama cats pregnant out there," Chaloub said. "We have no shelter and only rely on foster homes to take in our kitties and we are running out of foster homes, which means we have to say no to people, which scares me."

Chaloub said volunteers are also needed to deliver kittens to their new homes after adoption, or to help with the Petco adoptions days. Someone living in Carson City who commutes to Reno or vice versa could fill that position, she said.

Currently, about 20 people volunteer with the program. In the summer it's difficult to find foster homes because some of the volunteers go on vacation.

For information call Chaloub at 782-3754.
