Nevada Day fireworks may fizzle, fair organizer says

So far, not enough money

You may have to use your imagination to see fireworks this Nevada Day.

Janice Ayres, organizer for Retired Senior Volunteer Program's fair and carnival that in the past has included fireworks over the Nevada Day weekend celebration, said there is no money to put on fireworks.

"We aren't going to be able to do fireworks this year because I haven't been able to raise the money," she said. "I have not had anybody offer any assistance."

Ayres said, while many people believe the city puts on the fireworks, it is really the RSVP - at a cost of about $12,000.

"With the hurricane problem, I haven't been able to raise the funds," she said. "If the community wants fireworks, then the community has to respond."

Ayres said she is able to raise funds from local businesses for the Fourth of July fireworks, but is not successful for the Nevada Day event.

"RSVP ends up having to put the bulk of the money in," she said. "If I have to take $12,000 out of our program to do fireworks for the community, then our program - the Home Companion and Life Line program - is what suffers."

Ayres said the RSVP would be happy to arrange for the fireworks if another entity or business provided the funds.

"If somebody wants to put the money up, we'll be glad to do it," she said.
