The era of the locally owned Bodine's restaurant has been crushed beneath the bucket of a backhoe, soon to be replaced by a $10 million Western-themed casino owned by a Southern California developer.

Mark Beauchamp, co-owner of Shaheen Beauchamp Builders, the project's contractor, said Wednesday that the demolition of the restaurant and old trailer homes on the 3.1-acre property went smoothly.

"It's kind of a landmark that's going away, but it's progress," he said. "I think what we're going to put there is going to improve Carson City.

About 20 buildings were torn down by Marv McQueary Excavating, of Carson City. He said the workers took precautions to ensure that hawks nesting in surrounding trees were not disturbed. The demolition began on Thursday and was completed the following Wednesday. Cleanup will be finished by the end of the week.

The casino construction time line is still not finalized, said Bob Kubichek, director of development for Net Development Co.

"We're hopeful to get going by the end of the summer with the groundwork and the foundation," he said. "Utilities have to be brought into the building. The old Bodine's was on a well."

The property, on the corner of South Carson Street and Old Clear Creek Road, was purchased by Kevin Coleman, owner of Net Development and K&S Properties, for $4 million in December 2005. The restaurant owners sold to Coleman, who lives in Costa Mesa, Calif., after 20 years in business.

He's expected to invest $30 million into the casino, which does not yet have a name. The property has a non-restrictive gaming license, which means it does not have to meet a Carson City requirement for gaming properties to have a 100-room hotel.

The 33,124-square-foot casino will have an underground parking garage a restaurant and bar, Kubichek said. The developer has also started a deal with the city to pay for improvements at the fairgrounds and Fuji Park in return for overflow parking at the fairgrounds.

Because this is Coleman's first casino project, he plans to bring an experienced operator in on the project, Kubichek said. Those negotiations are still in process. Designers are working on the casino building plans, which will be resubmitted soon.
