One fatality, one injury in 24 hours at Lahontan State Recreation Area

Two accidents within 24 hours at the Lahontan State Recreation Area resulted in the death of a 17-year-old male and a back injury to an unidentified adult.

The first accident occurred at about 3 p.m. Saturday when the male, whose name has not been released, was digging into the embankment near the shore when it collapsed on him. He was taken by Care Flight helicopter to Washoe Medical Center and died from his injuries Saturday morning, according to Park Supervisor Rob Holley.

Just before 3 p.m. Sunday, two personal watercraft collided near Virginia Beach. Two people were injured in the accident. One was taken by Care Flight Helicopter to Washoe Medical Center, and the other was transported by private vehicle.

Few details are being released because the cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Holley estimates that more than 1,000 campsites were occupied Friday night and about 10,000 people used the park during the day Saturday.

"We encourage people to drink responsibly, be good neighbors to those around them, and report any suspicion activities to law enforcement," Holley said.

The recreation area is allowing campfires on the beach, but fireworks were prohibited in all state parks beginning Saturday.
