Douglas County Valley Bar to be rebuilt in Centerville

(Nevada Appeal News Service) - What's left of the Valley Bar is piles of rubbish in front of the burned remains of a building. The fallen roof makes it look like a chopped hot rod and the area still smells like a campfire.

But owner Julian Larrouy Jr. said there are plans to restore the bar that was destroyed by what appeared to be an electrical fire in the early morning of March 26.

"There's legal matters that need to be resolved, but we've got some current proposals to take it down and rebuild," Larrouy said.

Part of the reason the site has been left alone since the fire is insurance problems.

He said the piles of trash will be cleaned up in the next week or two, and an architect is drawing up plans for a new Valley Bar.

"Eventually we'll move the building off the corner because of highway problems," Larrouy said. "When we rebuild, we'll try to duplicate the shape of the building - there's nothing to salvage."

The building that housed the Valley Bar was moved to its present location at Centerville Lane and Highway 88 from Virginia City by a team of oxen.

It started as a cheese factory but had been a bar since 1902.

Larrouy said his parents purchased the bar in 1945 when it was called the Pride of the West. The family home was built next door in 1947.
