Record fundraiser speaks to the commitment of volunteers, community

Print Comment
Times are tight for many families in Northern Nevada, and several worthy causes and organizations are vying for every extra dollar.

That's what makes the record-setting fundraiser on Saturday for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada even more remarkable. The Kids Auction and World's Greatest Barbecue raised $325,000 for the operation of the club, which is relied on by hundreds of parents.

If you're one of the few people who aren't familiar with the club's impact on this community, all you need to do is drive down Stewart Street after school, and you'll see about 500 children playing, meeting new friends, and learning life lessons that will guide them for years to come.

Without the fundraiser, membership fees would likely be more expensive and fewer parents would be able to take advantage of the club's programs. The losers in that scenario would be the children who would be left to devise their own entertainment. They'd be deprived of well-planned programs tailored to help them live successful lives.

Part of Saturday's success is due to the ribs, the silent auction and the fame of Glen Campbell, which drew more than 850 people. But putting those elements together took many hours from volunteers and many donations from local businesses. They've taken the fundraiser a long way since it began in 1998, raising about $10,000 that first year, and are already looking at ways to repeat the success next September.

Congratulations to the members of our community responsible for Saturday's success.
