East Carson Home Depot takes first planning steps

The first big-box home-improvement retailer in east Carson City will begin its approval process in late January.

A city official said the Home Depot is on track to open the first or second quarter of 2008 near Wal-Mart.

"They will break ground following the approval process," said Joe McCarthy, economic development and redevelopment manager.

Home Depot chose this location because of its proximity to the Carson City freeway and the demographics of the area, according to the permit application.

"There is an existing Home Depot at the southern end of Carson City and the team believed this new location would complement the existing store and accommodate the growth (to) the north and east," according to the special-use permit application.

The new store will have a garden center and tool rental center.

This site at North Carson Crossing, off East College Parkway, is zoned for limited industrial, which requires a special-use permit for some Home Depot uses.

Its loading docks will be within 250 feet of a residential area.

Home Depot is requesting several other changes to zone allowances, such as:

• Twenty-four-hour operations

• Hours of construction 6 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 7 a.m.- 5 p.m. Sunday

• Delivery and receiving hours from 5-1 a.m. daily

The Wal-Mart shopping center is a great location for the store, and it will be a benefit to Carson City residents, said Mayor Marv Teixeira.

Project engineers submitted plans Wednesday for the special-use permit, which will be heard by the Planning Commission at its Jan. 31 meeting at 3:30 p.m.

The commision meets in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St.
