Letters to the editor

Bush abusing presidential power

It's really sad that Cindy Sheehan was treated so badly by this administration. If her questions were answered honestly, why her son was sacrificed, maybe then the pain wouldn't be so bad. Instead she was treated like a nothing in the eyes of our Mantle of Democracy's Warrior. (That's what he is calling himself this week. Last week he likened himself to Abe Lincoln, go figure).

When the Democrats hid under desks to this administration, it was a sign that no one can stop this corruption. She lost her son and her family for this answer.

It's nice to see our Supreme Commander and the little woman taking another vacation on Air Force One. He's promising Prague, Poland, Italy, Albania, Bulgaria and Russia billions of dollars to stop this global warming because of the pollution problem, to wean the U.S. off oil products, to stop wasting energy, and he will spend billions to find alternate ways to do this by opening up Alaska's game reserves and spending whatever it takes to keep his oil buddies' pockets lined, etc.

I wonder how much fuel Air Force One burns, how much pollution it gives off and if it is also helping global warming? "Who's going to stop me, I'm the President!"

Baby Boomers, we are in trouble.

Reid should provide details of immigration bill

Sen. Reid will re-introduce The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007 as soon as he can. This time, though, we have time to do a little homework.

The bill, S. 1348, is on thomas.loc.gov. It is massive - eight inches thick! - but these provisions caught my eye.

Getting legal status: Legality is granted after a satisfactory background check. Approval is automatic if the check cannot be completed within 24 hours.

Visa duration: Only temporary visas are granted. They can be renewed forever.

Back taxes: Illegals do not have to file or pay back taxes unless they choose to.

Earned income credit: If they choose to file back taxes, they are eligible for earned income credit that may be greater than the tax owed.

Previously ordered to report for a hearing or deportation: Absconders get amnesty without leaving the country.

Instate tuition: Illegals get instate tuition.

Identity theft: Using another's Social Security number or other identity document is forgiven.

Gang members: They get amnesty if they promise to quit the gang.

Priority of entrance: Illegals get visas before applicants who stayed home and applied properly.

Language: There is no requirement to learn English.

Mexican health care: The US taxpayer subsidizes health care in Mexico to encourage Mexicans to stay home.

Legal assistance: The US taxpayer pays the illegal's attorney if he/she does not like what is happening, relative to this immigration policy, and wants to sue.

To the best of my knowledge, all those provisions are in S. 1348. All of them raise questions. For example, consider the background check. It takes five days for a background check to buy a gun. Is one day, the bill's standard, a reasonable standard for these checks? Isn't this actually a guarantee that everyone will be approved?

Or take my favorite, legal assistance. The illegal can stay until the courts hear the case, decide, and process appeals. A huge number of suits surely will result. Already over-burdened courts will be clogged and long delays assured. Lawyers would be kicking down the doors of cultural centers to recruit clients. Why would anyone denied residency fail to sue?

To avoid misunderstandings Sen. Reid should tell us the bill's major provisions. Not just the broad-brush, feel-good subjects, such as "reunite families," but the effective provisions. Tell us what they mean, what impact they will have. Specifically. Unless, of course, he doesn't want us to know.

This is one of the most important, far-reaching pieces of legislation in years. It will affect the security, culture, and fabric of the country down to its very roots. If you like the provisions listed here, tell our senators. If not, tell them that. Either way, do it now. Often. Loudly. And demand details!
