Loved the jazz festival
Congratulations to Carson City for the world-class jazz festival held this past weekend. Many participants felt the highlight of the weekend was the Reno Jazz Orchestra performance featuring Cami Thompson. If there is a better big-band singer in America, would someone please let me know? Cami Thompson should be a major headliner whenever she performs.

Time for citizens to take back government
The Democrats promised to clean house in Congress, get us out of Iraq, reduce the deficit, fix the economy, provide health care, fix Medicare and SOS ... in the first 100 days?
Really!
What we saw was House Speaker Pelosi assuming presidential powers, tripping to Syria to meet with its hereditary dictator, ignoring the Logan Law, which describes her actions as "sedition bordering on treason."
Not being restricted by military capabilities, the Murthas, Reids, Pelosis, Kennedys, Bidens and Durbins group want to exit Iraq ... now ... minus a plan? All this "aiding the enemy" stems from their obviously blatant, utter hatred for Bush!
On "budget balancing," the speaker sent the president the largest tax increase in American history, a whopping $400 BILLION! Her comment to his complaint that it was $22 billion more than he requested was something like ... that's not so much. Well, maybe she'd like to come up with that $22 billion! She could strip Planned Parenthood's "killing monies" for part of it!
As for the Defense appropriations bill, Republican Rep. Jeff Flake, wanted to debate some of the 1,300 earmarks placed in the bill by individual House members, but Democrat Rep. John Murtha, defended and retained every earmark (including significant cash infusions to his Johnstown, Pa., district.)
Then there is the pending Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) connived by President Bush, former Mexican President Vincente Fox and former Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin to turn Canada, Mexico and the United States into the North American Union! Over my dead body!
As for "open government," does the "behind closed doors" immigration bill by Kennedy, McCain et al, with the blessings of the president, ring a bell? When the American people found out, they basically shut down the government! Now Democrats want to reinstate the "Fairness Doctrine" because? ... right-leaning talk radio gave citizens a heads-up! Ever hear of "free speech"?
How about their efforts to fix Medicare and Social Security? They want to cut our Medicare and Social Security monies and give it to illegal immigrants! How about rounding them up, deporting them, and securing the borders?
The only way to preclude such blatant dishonesty by lawmakers and take our country back is to demand congressional two-term limits, insist each and every "money bill" be free of all attachments! If a bill can't stand on its own, it's no good!
To protect our national sovereignty and security, demand the U.S. government fulfill its duty by securing our borders and enforcing our current laws!
If not, I guess we, the people, will have to do it for you!

Shocked by changes at Carson City church
On Aug. 12, the Harvey, Blaikie and Whittemore Family Reunion members from all over the U.S. attended the 11 a.m. service in the fellowship hall at the historic First Presbyterian Church in Carson City. The Rev. John Leslie Harvey was both the pastor and pastor emeritus of the church for many years, and John F. Blaikie served for over 40 years as the choir director.
After the service, family members were shocked to see the extent to which the sanctuary was torn up! Gone was the west wall, which contained a rosetta stained-glass window, organ pipes which were given in memory of my father, and gone were the beautiful cherrywood pews that had been given to the church as a gift.
I was made aware several years ago of the initial attempt to totally demolish the church in favor of a new sanctuary and subsequently wrote the church Session questioning the justification for the demolition. Their reply was that a fault had been found (conveniently?) under the structure. I wonder if the Capitol building and Methodist Church across the street are safe!
I am very thankful that there is a concern about saving historic buildings in Nevada and am grateful that part of the historic church building will be saved from demolition, although minus the 1947 addition. Tragically, it will probably never be used for worship again. In the light of diminishing attendance, one not only questions the need for a new sanctuary, but must also draw your own conclusions as to why the church could not have been saved and in use today.

Keep Carson Street at its two lanes
I agree with Gilbert A. Yanuck. With our continuing growth in population, we must not make Carson Street two lanes.
There is plenty of parking east and west of Carson Street. To improve business downtown, businesses need to provide SERVICE like they used to do before all the growth. Our city government officials need to pay attention to REAL FACTS before they make any decisions. Because of their failure to do this, we have lost millions of tax dollars because of their decisions regarding Wal-Mart and Jethro.

Class assignment taught students how not to drive
Students from Western Nevada College's New-Driver Education class have been observing drivers as part of the process in learning how to drive safely. The students observed 491 vehicles in 30 minutes on a typical summer morning at the corner of College Parkway and Ormsby Boulevard. The vehicles included personal, service, commercial and construction vehicles.
The students observed 179 drivers or passengers not wearing seat belts; 55 drivers eating, drinking or using their cell phones; and 84 vehicles failing to come to a full and complete stop. Many other drivers did not use turn signals properly, and numerous child car seats were not secured correctly in rear seats of the vehicles.
If we want our new drivers to learn to drive in a safe and effective manner, adult drivers should take note of their personal driving techniques and try to set a good example for our teenagers and other new drivers.
Western Nevada College continues to strive for the highest standards in teaching safe-driving standards. Classes are offered throughout the year on both the Carson City and Douglas campuses. Please take the time to drive safely.

Democrats focused on bringing down Bush
After months of investigations and hearings, the Democrats in Congress finally got their wish and rode Alberto Gonzales out of office.
Reid's reaction: "This is not the end of the story. Congress must get to the bottom of this mess and follow the facts where they lead, into the White House." In other words, continued waste of taxpayers' money with endless hearings and investigations.
With approval ratings in the teens, it would appear that the Democrats are still not interested in working on meaningful legislation (i.e. securing the borders, Social Security reform, illegal immigration, tax relief and more). Instead, the priority for this Do-Nothing Congress remains focused on bringing down the Bush administration.
The Bush derangement syndrome rages on at the expense of the taxpayers.

Don't judge all Hispanics by AG
Today, as I write, Attorney General Alberto Recuerdo Gonzales, one of the few Mexican-Americans who hold a position of power, prestige and salary commensurate with their merit, has publicly announced his resignation.
My boss very presciently called this a gift to racists, who will soon begin deluging blogs and newspapers across Nevada with posts, letters and propaganda decrying this disgraceful exit as evidence of the inherently criminal nature of Mexican-Americans. This will form the basis for persecuting and humiliating us so that we will voluntarily leave this former Mexican territory as well as keeping others out with a crude and barbaric wall of the sort that Israel has built to do the same to Palestinians.
I do not write in today to mourn the loss of one of us in Washington; I write in to say instead sarcastically: thanks a lot. You did no one a favor in being a standout criminal among some of the world's greatest. He was no toady or sycophant; he was actively complicit in unjust and illegal acts.
I need say no more than lying to Congress, wanton violation of the Geneva Convention and illegal firings of public officials for political purposes. These acts are beyond dispute.
I, as a Mexican-American, am not being color-blind when I say good riddance to Gonzales as a member of the Bush administration. He is merely a crook like the rest of them. I am not being color-blind when I say to the racists of Nevada: he is not like most of the rest of us. To you, we all look like criminals, yet our people, on balance, are about as good or as crummy as any other group of people.
To the racists, politicians in dark suits all look the same, and they get away with murder, whether their names be Cheney, Bush or something Hispanic Š like Gonzales.

Do street changes one step at a time
Can we wait and do one thing at a time? When the 395 bypass has been finished, the state will give to us the section of 395 that is in our downtown area.
At that time, we will be much more aware of the difference in the traffic patterns and be able to have a better feel if two lanes will be adequate for us.
If the traffic is still very heavy then we need to push through the Roop and Stewart Street upgrades to see if that reduces traffic significantly. It will be better if we can do the upgrades to the parallel streets before we do any changes on Carson. Once the upgrades are completed, we will have a much better feel for the traffic patterns on Carson in the downtown area.
The downtown area is in need of help but, like all things. this is going to take time and a lot of cooperation by many people and city departments. Don't give up, but look forward to what our community will be: a bright star of Nevada, the capital.
