Mother, daughter unhurt after car window shot out off Airport Road

A mother and daughter heading to their home off Airport Road on Wednesday night had their car window shot out by an unknown person.

According to police reports, the two were near Carmine Street at about 9:21 p.m. when the rear driver-side window on their minivan exploded. The two women inside were unharmed.

"We don't know for sure if it was a bullet or a BB," said Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Furlong said the woman reported seeing a red Toyota truck with flames on the tailgate leaving the area immediately after the shooting.

"Officers made contact with one vehicle, and it was eliminated as the vehicle the victims had seen," he said.

Gang officers responded to the scene and determined that neither woman or their family are affiliated with street gangs.

"What did happen? We're just not sure. Certainly someone's window was shot out. We have no information beyond that," Furlong said, saying it was unclear if the two women were an intended target.

Anyone with information on the Toyota truck is asked to call Carson City's nonemergency dispatch center at 887-2007.

Earlier this month, a Carson City deputy working speed enforcement on College Parkway reported he was shot at by a passing vehicle.

The officer chased the vehicle into a senior citizen mobile home park where at least two arrests were made. Two additional suspects were arrested in the following days.

District Attorney Neil Rombardo said Wednesday that his office will make use of a Nevada law that allows a penalty enhancement on crimes committed by gang members in furtherance of gang activity.

He indicated that he would file enhancement charges - which add from one to 20 years onto a sentence - against at least one of the men in the Jan. 19 incident.
