Virginia City baseball sweeps

Print Comment
While it wasn't necessarily The Jared Craig show Friday - after all, he had a lot of help from his teammates - the senior put on a dominating performance both at the plate and from the mound as the Muckers swept Wells 9-7 and 5-2 in their league-opening doubleheader at Virginia City High School.

Craig struck out 14 while pitching a two-hit complete game and went 2-for-3 and bopped a two-run, first-inning homer to help his own cause in the nightcap. He allowed three walks and two runs (both unearned).

In game one, Craig hit another round-tripper, a solo shot in the third inning, and finished 1-for-3 as Virginia City improved to 7-2, 2-0 in league.

Freshman Zach Shell lived up to his last name and bombed the Spartans with a fourth inning solo homer in game one, finishing 2-for-3. Jake McCain went 2-for-4 and chipped in with an RBI and a stolen base.

Senior Matt McDougal got the win in the opener, striking out seven, walking five and allowing five runs (two earned).

The ubiquitous Craig picked up the save, striking out one and allowing no hits over two innings.

In game two, McCain went 1-for-3, with two RBI and added a stolen base.

The Muckers will host Lee Vining (Calif.) in a doubleheader today beginning at noon.
