(Appeal Capitol Bureau) - The Secretary of State's office has established a system allowing Nevadans to set up living wills in al electronic format so that health care providers can access the instructions in an emergency.
Ross Miller announced the creation of the living will lockbox Tuesday, saying it will provide free electronic storage for living wills, do not resuscitate orders and other instructions for end-of-life emergency care.
He said it is a secure, web-based registry with password-restricted access that providers will be able to access so the person's wishes for treatment and care can be honored.
"Such documents are useless if they are not available when it is time for that treatment or care to be provided," Miller said in announcing the program.
The program was ordered by the 2007 Legislature in a bill sponsored by Reno Assemblyman David Bobzien. It will be operated at no charge to taxpayers using grants and sponsorships.
Those interested can obtain registration agreements and detailed information from the Secretary of State's offices in Reno, Carson City and Las Vegas or online at www.livingwilllockbox.com.
