Reporters using their noodles in Dayton on Saturday

Print Comment
This Saturday, I will get to do something I have wanted to do for a long time - cook noodles at Oodles of Noodles in Old Town Dayton.

Of course, now it may affect my relationship with a coworker.

I have had a vendor's booth at the event for the past two or three years - staffing it for the Virginia City Chamber of Commerce. We hand out information on the town, donate Silver Line Express tickets to the silent auction and sell raffle tickets for a gun of some kind (We have found guns to be the most popular raffle prize).

Usually the raffle gun is a black powder replica of an Old West revolver, or a black-powder rifle or shotgun, but this time we are raffling off a genuine cowboy-style, cartridge-loading revolver. It's a .45-caliber Colt, but made in Italy by Uberti. Brand new, empty (of course) and sleek, the revolver, we hope, will raise a great deal of money for Virginia City's Fourth of July fireworks.

I like doing the booth, because I get to talk to a lot of different people, and most Daytonites seem to like Virginia City and visit there often. But I never got to cook, because I didn't have a helper.

Well, this year, my husband, Carl, bless his heart, has agreed to help. One of us will cook, the other will sell the raffle tickets. We have an amazing recipe, which sadly I can't share with you here or my competitors will find out.

One of those competitors, F.T. Norton, the Nevada Appeal's crime and courts reporter, is also entering the pasta cookoff. She won the People's Choice Award several years ago.

Since we are both of a competitive nature, those of you attending the cook-off will be witnessing the Battle of the Appeal pasta-cooking reporters. We bet a drink on the outcome. So may the best pasta win, and remember, Daytonites, it's good to be loyal to the reporter that covers your community.

A great place to spend Friday is the all-female (well mostly) Follies performing for the next three Fridays at the Gold Hill Hotel.

"Just the Girls and a Few Token Men" offers some of the best pop tunes sung by the Comstock's best female singers.

Songs include "Friendship" by Leslie Stevens and Duffie Gillespie; "Unchained Melody" by Kimmie Huffman; "Bill Bailey" by Gillespie; "Cabaret" by Anna Green and Rae Maedor; "Cathouse Afternoon" by Sheree Rose, her husband, Will (one of the token men), Jo Kilmer, Maedor and Gillespie; "Fly Me to the Moon" by the Roses; "Georgia" by Stevens; "Sisters" by Huffman and pianist Squeak LaVake; "Feudin', Fussin' and Fightin'" by Stevens and Kilmer; and "Let Us Entertain You," by the entire cast.

Comedy is provided by Dan Morgan (another token man) and Cathylee James, who performed George Burns and Gracie Allen routines with excellent timing.

Music accompaniment is provided by Squeek LaVake on piano and Will Rose on guitar.

Another "token man" is Richard McGregor, husband of director Robin who is the emcee (and performs in drag). He said he would never again complain that it took her a half-hour longer to get ready than it did him, after putting on makeup, a wig, panty hose, etc. He sang "Hello, Dolly!" and "My Way."

The show is excellent, with the comedy timing good and the music a joy.

A four-course meal and wine will be served during the show. The Gold Hill has something of an exotic menu and offers salad, an appetizer, a choice of three entrees and a dessert that you aren't likely to find anywhere else, or make at home.

The whole evening is well worth the $45 per person cost. The show starts at 7 p.m. For information, call 847-0111.

Retiring Lyon County commissioners LeRoy Goodman and Bob Milz were given citations from Gov. Jim Gibbons in honor of their contributions as senior citizens, just before the commission proclaimed May "Older Americans Month."

Goodman said something about being the youngest on the commission, but no one was volunteering any ages.
