For some years past there has been a tradition among the Indians that there was some strange reptile in Washoe Lake, and none of them will ever fish there. A few nights ago several people fishing heard a bestial croak in the tulles which was much too loud for a frog and Deputy State Controller Holbrook said it sounded exactly like an alligator. Schneider, the baker, vows that he has seen a monster at least 18 feet in length.

Clarence Mackay, the only young man inheriting a fortune dug from the mines in Nevada who has ever shown any interest in Nevada, and who has already endowed the University of Nevada with a $100,000 mining building, $30,000 statue of his father, and $50,000 for improvement to the college grounds, has again opened his purse strings. He announced he is to give $6,000 per year to maintain the Mackay School of Mines. The regents accepted the gift and gave Mackay a free hand to make any improvements to the University he wished.

Special night police officer Daniel O'Brien's car was stolen from Carson City some time Wednesday night. The vehicle was found two miles south of Carson with the keys missing, the cap to the gas tank gone and the lights still shining. Some of the tires were flat. It was found the car had been pushed to the site. O'Brien had his keys all the time.

What recession? Nevada State sales tax shows a new gain. Sales tax revenue for the first quarter showed an upturn despite the general nationwide recession, the Nevada Tax Commission reported today.

The Douglas County Secret Witness Program is off and running thanks to the Douglas County Sheriffs Department and a handful of concerned citizens. After two months, the program has solved two cases, including an beer truck burglary and a moped theft.

Burglars took a large amount of money from a slot parlor in the Silver City Mall in a sophisticated burglary that involved breaking in four locked doors and cutting phone lines to dismantle an alarm system and sever phone service.
