A lot of fine people are going all out on Saturday, Aug. 23 to help Ron Toews (pronounced Tayves) and his family, at Decades Bar & Grill at 1475 Old Hot Springs Road. If at first you don’t succeed ... Lourdas Roja’s Las Reinas Mexican restaurant, is about five miles East of the DAYTON Smith’s, not the Carson one. And as we started to say last week (the paragraph was cut off) ... Rod Wissert, is the great and wonderful waiter there (he pays us the big bucks to say those things ... HA).

Many females use a date rape drug called ‘Beer.’ It is found in liquid form and is available in bottles, cans and kegs. ‘Beer’ is used by female sexual predators to persuade their male victims to go home and have sex with them. It attracts men to women whom they would not normally be attracted to, makes them wake up and remember that ‘something bad’ might’ve happened, and they’ve been swindled out of their life’s savings in something called a ‘relationship.’ In extreme cases, the servitude and punishment may even be called ‘marriage.’ If you fall victim to this ‘Beer’ there are male support groups where you can commiserate with like minded guys. For the support group nearest you, just look up ‘Golf Courses,’ in the phone book.”

Well, we see where the Luv Guv has gotten a sweet deal on his rural holdings, having to pay only $39.71 in taxes on a $575,000 piece of acreage in Lamoille, according to the Elko County treasurer’s office. Guess there are more perks than we realized in being governor for a term.

We know a 24-year-old young lady who was horrified to read the latest Cosmo where they invite young girls to “go commando.” If you don’t know what that means, they’re advocating young woman go without underpants, to be “daring” aka Britany Spears, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan et al. Next thing you know, they’ll be selling mirrored shoes to boys. Yes. THAT’s what it’s coming to.

Maizie had a wonderful birthday week, but remembers her brother-in-law saying, “It’s better to be on this side of the grass.” She certainly hopes so. Ranks right up there with, “It’s better to be over the hill than under it.” More happy birthdays to Janet and Emmy Heller, Dan Brewster, Mike Thompson, and Luke and Marissa Pusich.

We asked a couple of weeks ago about the status of the Boy’s and Girl’s Club out on Lompa Lane. Hal Hansen graciously replied that 90 percent of it is complete, however, the remaining 10 percent, paving and landscaping, still needs the money to pay for it. They have come a long way, but need to go a step further to get done. To help, they will be holding their annual “Kids Auction and World’s Greatest Barbecue,” on Sept. 6 at the Pony Express Pavilion, and will be featuring “It Only Takes One,” a project that asks each and every one of us to give a few dollars to help complete the club. So, if you’d like to help, please send it to the B&GC at 673 S. Stewart, Carson City, NV 89701, or “buy a brick” to help pave the new walkway, for $100 or $500 (call Adrian at 882-8820). The boys and girls of Carson City can use your help.

Cherie, DeeDee and Holly Hayes, of the 11 Hayes kids, came in last week for Cherie’s 40th high school reunion. It was great to see them, but we were sorry to learn that their sister Laurie had been killed in a car crash four years ago. The rest of the family is doing well.

The Elks in Gardnerville are holding their 15th Elks Carnival in Lampe Park from July 30 through Aug. 3. Admission is free, but “all day” ride tickets can be purchased for $15 in advance, or $25 at the gate, from any Elk, at Les Schwab Tires, or by calling Jim Schramm at 783-4224 (he has info on times, too). On Friday, at 2 p.m., they will let “special needs” kids ride for just $5. Lots of fun.

The Basil will be holding its first Thai cooking class on Saturday, Aug. 2, at 11 a.m. at the restaurant on S. Carson St. The fee is $65 (cash only), and must be received before July 31. There will be room for only 20 students, so sign up early. And, you get to eat the goodies you prepare. Mai pen rai.

Saturday, D’Vine Wine will host it’s annual Ribs & Zin Festival from 4-8 p.m. $45 each for all you can eat and all you can sample. Mallard’s will also be having it’s bi-weekly Couples Golf and dinner (885-2100) on Friday. And Wild Horse Children’s Theater at the Children’s Museum, presents “The Emperor’s New Clothes” and “All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten,” beginning Aug. 1. Call 887-0438 for times and dates. Great for the whole family.

Oh, there’s one more thing ... Harris Heller is leaving on a mission to Pittsburgh, Penn., next week. He'’ll be gone for two years, so if you’d like to bid him adieu, you’re welcome to say goodbye at his home this Sunday from 4-6 p.m. Good luck, Harris.
