Vegas police to identify jailed illegal immigrants

LAS VEGAS — Federal immigration officials and Las Vegas police have agreed to train some police officers to identify illegal immigrants in jail and start the process of deporting them.

A spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement says the agreement will only apply to people arrested on other charges.

Steven Branch, field office director for ICE detention and removal operations in Nevada, says certain officers at the Clark County Detention Center will do what ICE agents have already been doing.

Sheriff Doug Gillespie has said a partnership with ICE would not affect a long-standing policy that keeps local police from asking people on the street about immigration status.

Authorities say the partnership has not yet started as details are being finalized.
