Douglasgirls golf leads 4A after first round

ELKO - As expected, the Douglas High golf team is in the lead after the first round of the Northern 4A golf tournament at Ruby View Golf Course.
Douglas shot a 334, 18 strokes better than Bishop Manogue (352). Spanish Springs is third at 360 and Elko is fourth at 367. Reno is in fifth with a 373 followed by Galena 388, Damonte Ranch 393 and Reed 412.
The tournament concludes today with another 18-hole round.
The top two teams and the top five players from non-advancing teams advance to next week’s state tournament.
The Tigers had three players in the top 10 - first-round leader Bethany Wurster with a 75, Michele Nikkels fourth with an 84 and Heather Henderson was sixth with an 86. Douglas’ other scoring members were Shelby Louie was 14th with an 89 and Annika Crowe was 37th with a 106.
Carson’s three competitors - Chelsea Keating, Katie Cowperthwaite and Whitney Nash are well back in the pack.
Keating and Cowperthwaite are tied for 23rd place after first-round 94s. Nash is in 35th place after a 103.
Manogue’s Alex Phillips is second overall with a 79, while Fallon’s Rachel Vanderbeek is third with an 81. Reno’s Veronica Becher is seventh with an 86 followed by Elko’s Christina Kralich and Spanish Springs’ Ashleigh Sorensen with 87s.
Manogue’s Mackenzie Sowers, Spanish Springs’ Brittany Best, Elko’s Lyndsey James and Hayley Jensen are locked in a four-way tie for 10th at 88.
All four have an excellent chance to move on if they can shoot a couple of strokes lower today.

Galena wins girls tennis title
The Galena Grizzlies knocked off Reno 11-7 to win the Northern 4A girls team tennis championship Monday at Caughlin Ranch in Reno.
Hailey, Llop, the Grizzlies’ No. 2 player went 2-1 in singles, winning 6-2 and 6-2 before falling 1-6 to Shelly Tone in the third round. Mica Olson also went 2-1, winning 6-0 and 6-2 after dropping her opening match.
In No. 1 doubles, Lindy Deller and Adie Potter won 6-4, 6-0 and 6-2 to accounting for three of the 11 points. Emily McClintock and Leann Roggensach went 2-1, winning 6-3 and 7-6 in the first and third rounds respectively. The duo lost 6-4 in the second round.
Hannah Llop went 1-2 in No. 3 singles. She carved out a 6-3 win in her last match of the day. The No. 3 doubles team of Kelsey Rummler and Annie Roach lost their first two matches before winning a 7-6 tie-breaker in the third round.
Galena, which is undefeated, will play Green Valley at 9 a.m. at Centennial Park on Oct. 23. Reno will play Bishop Gorman at 1 p.m.
