Wine and beer tasting Sunday to help officers attend D.C. memorial

A wine tasting and motorcycle demonstration Sunday at Harley Davidson will help Carson City Motor Officers attend the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C., in May.

Carson City Sheriff’s deputy Sal Acosta said this year is especially important because a Sacramento sheriff’s officer killed in the line of duty will have his name added to the memorial.

Larry Canfield, 43, was killed Nov. 12 in an auto accident.

Acosta said that Canfield, along with several other officers from the Sacramento Sheriff’s Office, had attended every Carson City Sheriff’s Extreme Motor Officer Training in the past six years.

“We always read about some officer from some agency that died for some reason.

Normally we don’t know the guy personally,” said Acosta. “But in this case, we know the person. It’s personal for us. We want to go to Washington. We want to be there when they put his name on the wall. He is a friend of ours.”

Sunday’s event begins at noon and runs until the fun ends, said Acosta.

In addition to beer and wine tasting for $20, there will be a raffle of items donated by local businesses, and a mechanical bull.

Acosta invites anyone who has a beef with a specific officer to come down and pay a donation to see that officer ride the bull.

“I know there have to be people out there that want to get back at me for writing them a ticket,” he said.

He said the costs alone for sending the motorcycles of the two Carson officers to D.C. will be about $6,000. Airfare and lodging costs are above and beyond that.
