Carson Times ceasing publication

RENO (AP) — The Reno Gazette-Journal is laying off 35 more employees, about 10 percent of the newspaper’s work force, and shuttering operations of its weekly Carson Times. Its last edition will be April 17.

The cuts are in addition to the elimination of 61 positions since December. The newspaper also recently halted the publication of two other weeklies — the Douglas (County) Times and Fallon Star Press.

Publisher Ted Power says the layoffs were necessary because of the economic downturn and its impact on advertising revenue. He did not say how many of the layoffs were in the newsroom. He says departing employees were given severance packages based on their years of service to the newspaper.
