2 killed in plane crash near Mammoth Lakes

MAMMOTH LAKES, Calif. (AP) — Two people have died in a plane crash in the Sierra Nevada near Mammoth Lakes.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Mike Fergus says the single-engine Cessna with a pilot and passenger aboard crashed about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The plane went down seven miles west of the Mammoth Yosemite Airport in Mammoth Lakes.

Fergus says the plane had fueled up at the airport but its origin and destination were unclear because no flight plan was filed.

He says the pilot didn't report any problems before the crash and the cause is under investigation.

There's no word on the identities of the victims but the plane was registered to Regeneration Reservation, an Arizona-based Christian ministry that serves American Indians. A call and e-mail seeking comment from the organization were not immediately returned.
