Carson City to celebrate Halloween a day early

Carson City's ghouls and goblins will hit the streets one day early this year to avoid a conflict with the Nevada Day celebrations on Oct. 31.

Gov. Jim Gibbons will be giving candy to trick-or-treaters at the Governor's Mansion on Oct. 30 beginning at dusk.

There's plenty of time before then to get the perfect costume right here in Carson City.

Both of the Grimes Castle Haunted Houses connect to costume shops. As customers exit The Dungeon, they will go through the A to Zen Gift and Thrift Shop.

Owner Mike Epps said people shopped there last year to design their own costumes. This year a selection of new and used costumes have been added to the inventory.

He said a person could spend between $3 and $40.

“That's what we are about as a thrift store,” he said. “You can come in and do whatever you want. People come in here looking for scarves, polyester pants, something goofy just to costume up.”

The store will stay open until 10 p.m. Fridays through Sundays this month.

The Labyrinth haunted house in the Carson Mall will exit through the Revelations costume shop, which is liquidating merchandise.

“People can expect to find anything from a '20s flapper to Renaissance costumes to traditional superheroes,” said owner Monica Coleman. “These are high-end costumes that we're actually selling.”

She said they also stocked up on “fun accessories and novelty costumes.”

The store, now in what was the lingerie section of the old Gottschalk's, will extend its hours this month, open until 9 p.m. Fridays through Sundays.
