5 names added to firefighters memorial

(AP) — Five firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty were remembered at an annual ceremony today in Carson City.

Their names were added to Nevada Firefighters Memorial at Mills Park.

Calvin Wahlstrom of Huntsville, Utah, Gregory Gonsioroski of Baker, Mont., and Zachary VanderGriend of Missoula, Mont., died in a September 2008 crash of a firefighting air tanker north of Reno.

Also honored were Henderson firefighter Jeff Mann and Clark County fire Capt. Gregory Redmond, who both lost their lives to work-related cancer.

Cancer is considered a line-of-duty death because firefighters are exposed to chemicals and smoke at every fire.

The firefighters memorial was completed in 1994 and is maintained by a nonprofit organization.
