Sometimes I think to myself, how is it that students have any time to get into trouble? Between the academic rigor of their classes, the extracurricular athletics, and the club offerings we have at CHS, students have no excuses to be bored.
You will see a small sampling of the club offerings we have here at CHS and the current news of them. Please note that not all clubs offered at our school are listed below.
Key Club
Key club is a service club at CHS that currently has about 35 members. President Courtney Hack and the other members were recently recognized by the Carson City Chapter of the Navy League for their donation of books given to the Marine Corps base at Pickel Meadows in California. Congrats on this prestigious award!
Key Club will be holding a fundraiser at Johnny Rockets on South Highway 395 on Monday. “Dining to Donate” gives back 20 percent of your food ticket back to the club.
Environmental Club
CHS Environmental Club has continued its activities for second semester. The primary duties of this club are collecting paper, plastic and aluminum recycling from classrooms at CHS.
The club currently has 17 members and two advisers. The members are broken up into three teams, one for each floor of our building and for the Tech Center classrooms.
Every Thursday, one of the teams will begin its rounds by collecting paper and plastic/aluminum. On an average Thursday, the club fills up two bins of paper, and three to five large plastic bags of plastic/aluminum.
The club has formed partnerships with local recycling businesses that come to the school to pick up our sorted recycling. We have great participation among the teachers at CHS as around 80 percent of classrooms put out their recycling to be picked up by the students.
The entire school is working together to make the building more sustainable. Please contact Devin Nielsen at dnielsen@ carson.k12.nv.us for more information about this club. New members are always welcome.
Chess Club
Chess club meets every day at lunch with Mr. Holden in the ALC room. All are invited to join.
Animal AbuseAwareness Club
This club meets Thursdays at lunch. The club does community projects where they find homes for homeless animals. For more information about this, contact Ms. Hixenbaugh at lhixenbaugh@ carson.k12.nv.us.
Carson HOSA
Carson Health Occupation Students of America is preparing for a few events this spring. HOSA's state leadership conference is coming up in March and students are preparing and fundraising for a trip to Las Vegas to show their medical knowledge.
HOSA is also planning for another walk in March to raise money for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Link Crew
Link Crew will be conducting academic lessons on Feb. 8 and 9 in all freshman English classes.
Link crew leaders will be teaching activities that are based on perspective which will gear freshman as to how to be more successful academically and socially in high school.
Climbing Club
The Climbing Club has monthly trips to Rocksport Climbing Gym in Reno. The next trip is scheduled for Feb. 12. Newcomers are always welcome — no experience required!
Information about the Climbing Club and the spring schedule of trips can be obtained from Mr. Mital in room 213 or Mr. Casselman in room 203. Join us, do something you've never done and have some fun!
Native American Club
The Native American Club at Carson High has 25 members. The club promotes education, culture and community.
These three areas were chosen by the club members because they meant the most to them. Following is a brief description of what the club does in each area.
For education, the club members attend seminars on the importance education to native students. Some seminars provide education requirements of various careers. Other seminars promote remaining drug and alcohol free.
Members share their culture and participate cultural events, such as, the Laka Lel Be Pow Wow. The Pow Wow has many culture related activities, for instance, tribal dancing. It's also a place the club can do fund raising.
The club assists its community through donations and volunteer work. At Christmas, the club donates food baskets to tribal elders on the Carson Colony and Stewart Community reservations. The club also provides grooming supplies to Friends In Service Helping (FISH).
National Honor Society
National Honor Society is one of the biggest clubs at CHS with members from the sophomore, junior and senior classes.
In order to be a part of NHS, students must maintain a grade-point average of 3.45 and be involved both in the school and in the community. The members are required to fulfill 25 hours of community service throughout the school year.
We recently hosted our second blood drive of the year. We had 133 donors successfully give blood and we collected 154 units of blood which exceeded our goal of 146! If you have any service project ideas and would like NHS to consider them, contact Elena Glenn at eglenn@carson.k12.nv.us or Lynette Brown at lbrown@carson.k12.nv.us.
Bowling Club
The CHS Bowling Club competes in the High Desert Interscholastic Bowling Program. CHS is the only team that competes in the league from outside the Reno area.
The team comprises 20 bowlers, and is coached by Vern Barnes and Kevin Costa. Advisers for the team are Chris Manschreck and Erin Been.
Every year the CHS bowlers have taken the title. We are five matches into this season and have a record of 4-1.
Spring Sports Sign-ups
A reminder that spring sports sign-ups start 5:30-6:30 p.m. Monday in the north foyer. Sign-ups will continue through Feb. 14. Contact Kathy Taylor in the athletic office for more information.
Business of the Month
CHS is honored to recognize Capital Ford and owner Dick Campagni as our Business of the Month for January. Mention the name Dick Campagni in this town, and you know that he and his employees go above and beyond to give back in our community and most often to our schools and youth programs of the city.
Specifically, here at CHS, the Ford Motor Co., via Capital Ford, has partnered with CHS to participate in a program called “Drive One For Your School.” This program has raised $32,000 in the last two years for such programs as CHS baseball, girls basketball, cross country, and SafeGrad. Thank you, Dick Campagni, and Capital Ford for your generous support to CHS!
Senior Spotlight
This week's senior spotlight is on Harrison Root. Harrison has a grade-point average of 4.5 and is a member of the advance jazz ensemble.
He has been accepted to Oregon State University where he will study chemical engineering. Harrison is a member of National Honor Society and enjoys climbing on the weekends with our rock-climbing club. When he is not in school, he plays the electric and acoustic guitars. We are very pleased to have Harrison as a CHS student and wish him well after graduation.
Staff Fact
Answer to last week's fact is Fred Steinle. Mr. Steinle was an original Tuba member of the UNR Marching Band from 1980 to 1984. Mr. Steinle is a social studies teacher at CHS currently teaching Psychology and AP Psychology.
