Nevada to apply for No Child Left Behind waiver
(AP) — Nevada will apply for a waiver from federal No Child Left Behind education requirements in February.
The state Department of Education says administrators have been meeting with school districts, community leaders, national experts and others over the past four months to come up with an acceptable alternative.
Department officials say Nevada's waiver application will be submitted to the U.S Department of Education by Feb. 21.
Nevada and other states say the federal requirements on student achievement don't adequately reflect progress made to improve math and reading scores.
Nevada officials say a state plan will be tailored to the specific needs of individual schools and school districts.
Missing Chicago man sentenced in Vegas
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A 73-year-old man has been sentenced to three years of probation after disappearing from Chicago more than 32 years ago and starting a new life in Las Vegas under an alias.
The Las Vegas Sun reported Tuesday that Arthur Gerald Jones was given a suspended sentence of 18 to 48 months and ordered to pay about $90,000 in restitution. He had pleaded guilty to felony identity fraud.
Some of the money will compensate the Arizona man whose identity he stole when he moved to Las Vegas.
Jones left a wife and three children in Highland Park, Ill., in 1979, and was pronounced legally dead several years later.
He was arrested July 19, after he was accused of providing false information to the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles.
Boy cyclist was grabbing moving truck before crash
RENO (AP) — Authorities say they believe a 12-year-old bicyclist was trying grab onto his mother's moving pickup truck before a major crash in Spanish Springs.
The Washoe County Sheriff's Office says the boy lost his balance, hit the pavement and was bleeding profusely from the head after the crash Sunday evening on Rockwell Boulevard. He was flown by helicopter to a hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
Sheriff's officials say it's illegal and unsafe to grab onto a vehicle on roadway. They say they see skaters, bicyclists and sleds attached to cars “far too often” and want to remind the public of the dangers of those activities.
The Washoe County Sheriff's Major Accident Investigation Team is investigating the incident.
