Republicans throughout Nevada are expecting a strong turnout for their caucuses Saturday. In Carson City, Carol Howell said she is planning for as many as 5,000 people to visit their Mallory Way site.
But a lot of attendees in the capital, she said, won't be able to stay all day, so the party has set up a “Vote and Go” program, opening the doors at 7 a.m.
“It's for casino workers, first responders, clerks, waitresses — the people who would have been disenfranchised in voting if we had not opened up at 7 o'clock,” said Howell, of the Carson City Central Republican Committee.
Howell said most people don't understand that the caucuses are about more than just picking a presidential candidate. In Nevada, the presidential preferential poll determines what percentage of delegates each candidate gets at the state convention.
But, she said, voting for the delegates to the county convention will be very important as the process moves next to the state and then the national convention, because those delegates are bound to a specific candidate only for the first nominating vote. If the nomination takes more than one ballot, she said, “Then the delegates are released and can vote the candidate of their choice.”
“That's what makes selection of the delegates so important. So it's important to take part in the whole thing, not just the preferential poll vote,” Howell said.
In addition to that, she said, those attending propose and debate planks for the party platform, and those wishing to have a say in the party's direction need to participate in that process.
In Carson City, the caucuses begin at noon. Participants will hear from either the candidates by DVD or their representatives. The precinct meetings start at 1 p.m.
Peggy Gray of the Lyon County Central Committee said doors there will open at 8:30 a.m. in each of the six caucus locations. The caucuses will begin at 9 a.m.
She pointed out that, in order to participate, attendees must have registered Republican by Jan. 20.
As in Carson City, the presidential preference vote will be followed by debate to develop a platform and elect delegates to the county convention.
Douglas County Republicans will go through a similar process beginning at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Because Douglas stretches from Stateline at South Lake Tahoe to Topaz Lake, there are a total of 19 meeting sites for 41 precincts.
The Nevada GOP apportions delegates by the percentage of the vote they get. In some other states, such as Florida, it's winner take all.
