Julia, our Julia, is now in jail for an over-affectionate courtship of John Barleycorn. She claims to have been the morganatic wife of General Sheridan when he was a lieutenant. When Julia has just been drinking enough to render her loquacious - before her vivid imagination impels her to seek birds of paradise and anacondas in the Capitol grounds - she leaves to dwell upon the amours of her halcyon days, when little Phil, used to herd Indians in the plains. Upon such occasions Julia is as sentimental as in the days of her first love.

100 years ago

Emilio Britano of Alta was struck by lightening Thursday and instantly killed. He and a hired man had gone to Mineral Hill to transact business when they were struck at the top of a very sharp peak. The hired man regained consciousness some time later, had to get out from under his horse, and found Britano some distance away.

70 years ago

Burr G. Burbank, in charge of the ground course for civil pilot training of the Stockton junior College extension in Carson City, was the guest speaker at Rotary yesterday. Mr. Burbank described the daily routine of young men in training for the Army and Navy. The boys are in the air every day by 6 a.m.

50 years ago

Air Force Major Rob Rushworth took the rocket plane X15 on a "hot" ride today at Edwards Air Force Base. Temperatures of the aircraft skin reached 1,100 to 1,200 degrees.

20 years ago

WNCC students are struggling to find classes following a 11 percent budget shortfall this year. "We will be turning away students, because the classes will be filled," said an administrator.

Forgotten memories highlighted a gathering of more than 40 people in Antelope Valley when veterans shared their memories of World War II.
