Symphony season opener Sunday will include harmonica workshop

A bonus harmonica workshop is planned on Sunday for youth attending the season-opening Carson City Symphony Orchestra concert.The 29th concert season opens with “Scandinavia & All That Jazz” in the Carson City Community Center’s Bob Boldrick Theater, 851 E. William St., at 4 p.m. After the first half of the concert, harmonica player Tom Stryker will lead the workshop. Each participant will be given a harmonica and learn to play a tune. After the intermission, the participants will perform on stage.Admission to the workshop is free for those in attendance. Children under 16 get into the concert free. Tickets for seniors, students and symphony association members are $12. General admission is $15.The concert includes works by Scandinavian composers and features guest soloist Carl Petersson, a Swedish pianist. Also featured will be “It’s About Time: Styles for Jazz Combo & Orchestra” by David Bugli, the orchestra’s conductor. For that part of the concert, there is a five-piece combo that includes Stryker and his harmonica; Dan Lancaster, saxophones and flute; John Shipley, piano; George Worth, bass; and Lee Warner, drums.There is a pre-concert lobby performance by STRAZZ youth strings group at 3 p.m., a concert preview hosted by Bugli in the center’s Sierra Room at 3:15 p.m.
