Howard Lawrence Anderson was born on Oct. 24, 1921, in Pontiac, Mich., to Lillian and Edward Anderson. After graduation from Pontiac High School, he moved to Southern Calif. where he worked for aircraft manufacturer, Vultee Corp. for 50¢ per hour. Howard joined the U.S. Navy in 1942, and trained at St. Mary's College, Calif., Tempe, Ariz., and Jacksonville, Fla., receiving his Navy wings at Corpus Christi, Texas. He then deployed to the South Pacific, where he flew a variety of aircraft. His favorite was the PBY-2 Catalina.
