Judge Cary was thrown from his barouche and received painful injuries... It appears that he put a young colt in the vehicle which had been recently broken, and the animal ran away and collided with the steps of the school house, a short distance from Mr. Cary's residence and smashed the barouche up pretty badly...

The next night he had to sleep in the woods and gnaw some bacon he cooked by holding it to the fire on the end of a stick. He kept warm by building four big fires and lying in the center under his coat. If he had waited a few days, he would have been caught in the snow storm...
