Bloody work: Two brutal tragedies in Esmeralda county took place when seven men were killed at the little towns of Gold Mountain and Silver Peak... At Gold Mountain, a small stage station about 30 miles from Candelaria contains a store and three houses. A stage going to Candelaria was intercepted by a man who crawled out to the road and told the driver that four men had been killed at the store... He was struck and rendered unconscious. He left the place as soon as possible and finally became so weak from loss of blood that he was obliged to crawl on the ground (continued on Saturday).

Vase: The man who won the elegant vase at the Episcopal entertainment was Major Ford. He came within five beans of the true figures. E. B. Rail made an elaborate mathematical calculation which took four days... and had 76 variations.

War time--canned goods rationed: There will be a freeze period during which no canned goods will be sold. Consumers who decide that the canned foods allotted them are not enough must appeal to their local rationing boards... applies to condensed and evaporated milk, jellies, jams, preserves, fruit butters, canned and bottled fruit and juices.

50 Years Ago

No justices: Lt. Gov. Paul Laxalt sent three senators out to escort the state's three Supreme Court justices to the opening of the legislative session. They returned empty-handed and Laxalt reported to the chamber - "One's in Las Vegas, one's in Reno and one's at Enrico's for lunch."

Photo caption: Hundreds of local residents applied for almost 250 jobs that will be available at the new Mervyn's store... The lines began forming more than two hours before the Mervyn's Frontier Plaza annex hiring office opened... The annual payroll for the 60,000 square-foot store will be more than $1 million.

A 37-cent love stamps had been released. "Love is Sweeping the Country" is the title of a song written by Rogers and Hart. The U.S. Postal Service has been using this theme since 1973...
