Cameras installed at CCHS

Surveillance equipment installed at Churchill County High School is proving invaluable to administrators to help enforce school rules.

Vice Principal Shawn Purrell said several cameras operate in areas where students tend to congregate and where past problems have happened.

The digital cameras cover both indoor and outdoor areas of the high school. The exact locations of the equipment are not being revealed for safety reasons.

Finance Director Jim Sustacha said he recently read an article on school safety that cautioned against releasing specific information about security systems in schools. He said the location of safety equipment could be used by someone who wanted to come onto campus and do harm.

Purrell said one camera has tilt, pan and zoom capability, which allows it to record areas that need extra surveillance.

The equipment was installed about two months ago.

"If a situation happens, like a fight or someone smoking, we can go back and review it," Purrell said. "We miss a lot of stuff because we don't have 100 percent of the campus covered ... They've been wonderful so far. I would like to get more of them."

The Churchill County School District received a $100,000 Community Oriented Policing Grant in 2005 to put cameras and security fencing in parking lots. The grant required the district to contribute $50,000.

Sustacha said the district was awarded another $100,000 this year. Part of the money will be used to improve locks at the high school and add more surveillance cameras. If money is left over, he said, it could be used for security measures at other Fallon schools.

"We're working to make sure we get the greatest safety measures we can. That's one of our priorities," Sustacha said.
