Annual fly-in festival occurs in Silver Springs this weekend

This year's Lyon County Fly-In on Saturday and Sunday at the Silver Springs Airport will celebrate kids in aviation by offering free flights for children.

Ron Bell, organizer of the 13th annual Fly-In, said this year seven pilots have volunteered to bring their aircraft and spend the weekend taking children ages 8 to 17 for 15-minute flights as part of the Experimental Aircraft Association's Young Eagles Program.

"It's their way of giving back to the aviation industry and (to) get kids involved," Bell said.

Children who participate in the Young Eagles program will receive a picture and a certificate to commemorate the event.

The pilots are not paid to appear at the fly-in, and Bell said he would like to find a way to reimburse them for their fuel. So far he's received a monetary donation from the Nevada Automotive Test Center and is looking for more. He said interested parties should contact him through the event's Web site at www.lyoncountyflyin.com.

Both days begin with the arrival of aircraft at the Silver Springs airport and the popular pancake breakfast. Bell said a group of volunteers from the Silver Springs Senior Center will cook breakfast, and the center will share the profits to help fund its Meals on Wheels program.

Anyone in uniform on Saturday, also Armed Forces Day, can eat for free at the pancake breakfast, as well as the participating pilots.

The Silver Springs 4-H rocket group will participate in the opening ceremonies and hold displays featuring their rockets.

A parcel of displays will be at the airport, including antique planes, model planes, military planes, and a vintage car show with participants from the Dayton Valley Car Club. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team and the Search and Rescue team from NAS Fallon will both be on hand at the fly-in.

A kids' area with various activities will be set up, providing young children the opportunity to color, play with items from their goody bag, and to decorate a kite and fly it.

"We want to give parents an opportunity to do something with their kids at this event," Bell said.

Close to three dozen vendors will be at the airport offering jewelry, crafts, energy drinks, resort trips and information from various local groups.

Bell said a rock climbing wall will also be set up.

"We have a matrix of things," he said.

A coupon, completed with four stamps, is available for a either free raffle ticket, or with a carload of four people, the couple entitles the driver to free admission, a free raffle ticket and a free hot dog.

In Fallon, coupons are located at Jeff's Copy Express and Domino's Pizza.

A "Super Raffle" will be held, featuring prizes like a Southwest Airlines ticket, an MP3 player, airplane kits, video rentals, restaurant gift certificates and more.

The event runs from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.

For more information on the fly-in, please visit the event's Web site at www.lyoncountyflyin.com.
