7-7-07 Couples plan weddings for lucky day

Wedding rituals and superstitions have been around for decades, maybe even centuries: the groom is not allowed to see the bride before the wedding, the lady who catches the bouquet will be the next to marry, the bride must have something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue for luck.

Now, a new trend has popped up - choosing a date that won't be easy to forget, like 1-2-03, 5-5-05 and this year's 7-7-07.

According to theknot.com, a popular wedding planning Web site, there are about 12,000 weddings registered through the site on a typical Saturday in July. But on 7-7-07, an estimated 38,000 weddings are registered. Even actress Eva Longoria plans to marry NBA star Tony Parker on 7-7-07.

"It's a trend that started when we hit the millennium - it's not only 7-7-07, it's 2-2-02, 4-4-04, it just triggers something in people," said Bev Bedard, executive director of North Lake Tahoe Wedding Association. "I'm fully booked that day with three weddings and I turned away four or five couples. Everyone I know is booked for that day."

IVGID pipeline operations supervisor Bob Lochridge and his fiancée, Paula Pechaceck, are planning to marry on 7-7-07.

"That way it'll be easier to remember - plus, it's got to be lucky for us, this is a gambling state," Pechaceck said. "Not only is it on 7-7-07, but we're also having the wedding at 7:07 p.m. and we're doing 7 and 7's for the toast."

While their idea has many benefits, it's certainly not original.

"We didn't even think twice about it, but it seems to be really popular," Pechaceck said. "We've got three people who couldn't make it to our wedding because they have other ones to go to that day."

Karen Erickson, marriage and business division operations supervisor at the Washoe County Clerk's office in Reno, said she and her staff expect 7-7-07 to be a busy day for marriage licenses.

"We beefed up our staffing for that day because the chapels have been saying they're booked," Erickson said. "On a typical Saturday, we issue 100 to 150 licenses, so we really expect 7-7-07 to be busy because of its popularity."

Bella Affair Catering in Crystal Bay will certainly be very busy that day.

"We were just laughing last week because someone called to plan their wedding for that day, which of course they should have started two years ago," said catering manager Dana Lipsky.

Since Tahoe is already a dream destination for weddings and 7-7-07 falls on a Saturday, its popularity is inevitable.

"I can't tell you how many calls I've gotten - people getting married at 7,000 feet at 7 a.m., families of seven, wedding parties of seven," said Heidi Wilson, photographer and North Lake Tahoe Wedding Association vice president.

"It's big - I have just two, but we only have one site and I had dueling couples for that wedding date," said Kathy Giebel, wedding coordinator at the North Tahoe Conference Center in Kings Beach. "I'm still getting calls for it."
