South Shore residents and visitors can eat right, listen to good music, pick up after one another, learn how to make things, qualify to win a mountain bike and drink to be merry.
That's the essence of Earth Day, South Lake Tahoe, a ceremonial day to honor the planet set for Sunday. The event happens to fall on April 22, the day after the birthday of John Muir, a mountaineer, naturalist and founder of the modern preservationist movement who graced the trails of the Sierra Nevada upon which we live.
Earth Day also lands on the birthday of Julius Sterling Morton, the founder of Arbor Day - which marks a national tree-planting holiday starting in 1872.
In 1970, U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin organized an environmental teach-in that attracted 20 million people. The day now prompts action from 500 million conscious citizens living around the globe - Tahoe people included.
Earth Day things to do:
* The K-kids at the St. Theresa School will be out at Regan Beach from 11 a.m. to noon on April 24 for Earth Day.
* An earth-friendly vegan potluck is being hosted at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Lake Tahoe Community College by A.W.A.R.E., Advocates for Wellness, Animal Rights and the Environment, as a way of educating people to the ecological impact of the animal agriculture industry. Cows raised for beef emit nitrous oxide and methane, a gas that contributes to global warming more than carbon dioxide.
* LTCC is also hosting a film Friday night at 7:30 p.m. called "Resorting to Madness: Taking Back Our Mountain Communities." The film will be shown at the Duke Theater. Donations of $5 will be accepted at the door.
* MontBleu Resort Casino is putting on an Earth Day festival billed as "a zero waste event" on May 5 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The festival highlights music, booths, an electronic waste pick-up effort, crafts, a raffle and a "Push, Pull or Pedal Eco Parade."
* Markleeville will undergo a creek cleanup on Earth Day at Elizabeth Coyan Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* The Green Party is doing its part by organizing an Earth Day celebration at the El Dorado Public Library lawn in Placerville on April 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Five local bands will provide the music backup to other displays including raptors, adoptable pets, face painting, hemp and crafts. Attendees are advised to bring lawn blankets or low-back chairs.
* Clean Tahoe's annual dump day is set for June 9 at South Tahoe Refuse.
* The Patagonia Wild and Scenic Film Festival will be shown from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. April 27 at Bar One in Squaw Valley.
* Squaw will also be the setting for an Earth Day fundraiser party including a shotgun wedding quintet, which is scheduled at 9:30 p.m. on April 27.
* The Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Festival is slated for 10 a.m. April 28 at the Village at Squaw Valley. The region's environmental issues will be discussed by an assortment of representatives from various agencies and organizations. Live music will be played.
