			<title>Sandoval’s HR lifts Giants past Nationals, 4-2</title>

					SAN FRANCISCO — Sweating, sniffling and sneezing, Pablo Sandoval felt horrible until his final swing. Sandoval hit a towering two-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning after Gregor Blanco’s tying triple in the ninth, and the San Francisco Giants rallied past the Washington Nationals 4-2 on Tuesday night. “You have to give 100 percent no matter what. It’s your job to fight,” said Sandoval, who was so dehydrated he had to receive intravenous fluids before the game. Saddled with flu-like symptoms all week, Sandoval flipped his bat and shifted into a slow trot as soon as he  &hellip;

					NEW YORK — John Tortorella’s message isn’t going to change even though his New York Rangers are in an even more desperate situation than before their latest loss to the Boston Bruins. The margin of error went from slim to none in an uncharacteristic home loss that put the Broadway Blueshirts on the brink of elimination. New York squandered a one-goal lead in the third period and lost 2-1 on Tuesday night to fall into an 0-3 series hole. The Rangers can be ousted by the Bruins as early as Thursday in Game 4 at home. “We’ll meet (Wednesday), practice,  &hellip;

Now the job gets really tough: The Sharks know they need to end the home-team dominance if they have any chance of winning this second-round series. Brent Burns got San Jose off to a fast start with a quick score and Logan Couture added a power-play goal early in the second period before the Sharks held on for a 2-1 victory Tuesday night to knot their series at two games apiece. “We knew going into this  &hellip;

That homer by Yoenis Cespedes was the only run Darvish and the Rangers allowed, but that was all the Oakland Athletics needed to win 1-0 behind seven scoreless innings by rookie pitcher Dan Straily. “Initially, I didn’t think it was a home run,” Darvish said through his translator. “Being in this stadium, there was nothing you could do about it.” Darvish had won his last seven regular-season starts at Rangers Ballpark, going back to last season. 					For Western Nevada College’s baseball team and its fans, it didn’t seem like the Cochise fourth inning would ever end. The inning started on Saturday afternoon, was interrupted by lightning and rain and then lasted an additional 28 minutes on Sunday afternoon in the Western District baseball tournament championship. By the time the final out was recorded on a tag out by second baseman AJ Hernandez, 15 Apaches had batted and 10 runs had scored, erasing a one-run deficit as Cochise rolled to an 18-11 title-clinching victory over the Wildcats in Sterling, Colo. “We walked seven or eight batters and  &hellip;

					STERLING, Colo. — D.J. Whittemore said it wouldn’t be easy for Cochise College to apply the knockout punch to his club in the Western District baseball championship. The eighth-year Western Nevada College baseball coach proved to be prophetic as the Wildcats rallied from a two-run deficit to win 5-4 and force a deciding game on Saturday in Sterling, Colo. That game, however, was suspended because of lightning. The teams will try to play at noon today with the winner advancing to the NCJA World Series in Grand Junction. 					Douglas swimming standout Shelby Koontz capped a brilliant freshman season Saturday, winning the Division I state title in the 100 free at the Carson Aquatic Center. Koontz won the event with a time of 51.19, breaking the school record in the event for the fifth time this season. It marked Douglas’ first swimming state title in any event since 2010 and the first in an individual event since 2009 (Haley VonSchottenstein, 100 breaststroke). Koontz, the Northern Division I Swimmer of the Year, also finished second in the 50 free, just getting edged out at the end by Bishop Gorman’s Amy  &hellip;

					It’s become readily apparent after watching Northern Nevada track for the past few years that Carson High has the best facilities in the area, and should host the state track meet every other year. I know that statement will irk the nice folks at Damonte Ranch, but they need to accept the fact their track is No. 2 behind Carson. Carson gets its chance next year when it hosts both the regionals and state meet on back-to-back weekends. Hopefully it will be the start of a every-other-year ritual. “Advantage Carson,” said Carson coach Robert Maw when I asked him about  &hellip;

At one point, Fallon led 13-6 but the Vauqeros tallied eight runs including five in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out the win. Lady Wave freshman Kalyn Huckaby and Miranda Ford each committed errors in the seventh to give Fernley life. 					STERLING, Colo. — The situation looked discouraging for the Western Nevada College Wildcats in the second inning of their Western District baseball tournament opener in Sterling, Colo., on Thursday afternoon. Lamar Community College was in command, 5-0, after knocking starting pitcher Brandon Show out of the game. WNC had committed two errors and the Lopes’ ace, Sam Wilson, was throwing the Wildcat hitters off stride. 					Sports fodder for a Friday morning . . . On the surface, Chris Ault joining the Kansas City Chiefs as a consultant makes absolutely no sense. Why would Ault go to a team that has an offensive-minded head coach (Andy Reid) and with a quarterback (Alex Smith) that will never line up in more than a dozen or so pistol formations in a game? The Chiefs’ offensive coordinator (Doug Pederson) and quarterback coach (Matt Nagy) are Reid disciples from the Philadelphia Eagles. And the Eagles have also hired another offensive consultant (Brad Childress) to watch over Reid’s precious spread offense.  &hellip;

					Coming off two school records, Fallon’s Sam Martin aims to lead the Fallon swim program into the history books. The Greenwave look to capture their first individual state title in 14 years as the club swims at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Division I-A state meet at the Carson Aquatic Center. The atmosphere around the Fallon program, though, is one of excitement and nerves. Powerhouse Boulder City has many of the fastest swimmers and relays, which will present the Wave swimmers with their biggest challenge of the season. “I got a couple kids looking to move up and place,” Fallon  &hellip;

					The quest for history begins today. The Fallon boys track team will race for its third consecutive Division I-A state championship at 3 p.m. at Silverado High School in Las Vegas. Saturday’s action begins at 8 a.m. The Greenwave’s journey to a school-record began with their third straight regional title at last week’s regional meet in Yerington. While Fallon blew through its competition, DI-A newcomers Mojave and Chaparral present the Wave’s toughest challenge to date. Mojave slipped past the Cowboys, 93 ½-93, to capture the Southern DI-A regional crown last week. The newest members of the DI-A carry speed and  &hellip;

					YERINGTON — Deep and talented is too much to overcome. The Fallon boys track team blew past the competition during Friday and Saturday’s Northern Division I-A regional meet. The Greenwave won their third straight regional title with 180.5 points followed by Elko (104.5) and Dayton (90.5). Fallon, though, heads into this week’s state meet with an opportunity to win its third consecutive state championship. The Lady Wave, meanwhile, tied for third with Dayton behind Spring Creek (137.5) and Elko (136).
