CARSON CITY — The Nevada National Guard held a Flag Day ceremony for the 15th straight year at the Capitol building to commemorate the 236th anniversary of the U.S. flag and the U.S. Army’s 238th birthday on Friday. The ceremony was held inside the Nevada Capitol Assembly Chambers. Master Sgt. Harry Schroeder of the 757th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion gave the Flag Day address. He spoke about the history of Old Glory and its meaning to him. “On days like this we should all reflect on what the flag means to us and take a moment to reflect on the …

At the ceremony celebrating the 238th birthday of the Army, Secretary of the Army John McHugh said birthdays can be bittersweet. “When I blow out candles, I start thinking it’s another year closer to that inevitable conclusion,” McHugh said. “But I want to make a suggestion for this occasion: that we consider instead of turning a year older, the Army is turning a year newer, a year better, a year stronger.” Throughout the ceremony, which took place in the Pentagon auditorium, McHugh, Chief of Staff of the Army Gen. The U.S. Highway 395 bypass through Carson City will be open tonight. Crews placed an oil-based application on the road that will extend its life cycle, said Scott Magruder, NDOT spokesman. The work was set to continue tonight if necessary, but it was completed overnight Monday and early Tuesday. “It’s a rejuvenation. You want asphalt to not be too dried out,” Magruder said of the process. “Sometimes it’s easier to just close the road. And the weather was good, too. We had good temperatures.” …

140 years ago Grit will be lectured on tonight at the Methodist Church by Reverend Casebeen. As a local commentator upon this lecture informs us: “Mr. Casebeen has cut loose from the idea that too many irons may be put in the fire at the same time. This is “grit.” 130 years ago Yesterday the Appeal compositors moved into their new quarters in the rear of the present office. The printers now have a bright, spacious composing room which is a marked contrast to the old smoke-grimed, quarters used by them for so many years. 100 years ago An aeroplane, …

Two things at the same time.” More than 70 children showed up Monday to eat a free lunch and participate in activities as part of Food for Thought’s second annual summer lunch program. Then came the fun. With about 45 volunteers directing the party, children and their parents moved about among bounce house, face painting, bubble blowing, …

From Carson City’s drinking water to its wastewater, from Carson River’s headwaters to the Carson desert, a bus tour this week showed why water is a bit like oil. In a word, valuable. The two-day “Get on the Bus” Carson River watershed tour ending Thursday demonstrated that there is too little water much of the time and too much during floods. Like a watery famine, the 184 miles of watershed becomes parched in drought years. A water feast brings a floodplain bloated with H2O. But dry is the byword now. “You’ll see in the Carson — especially this summer — …

Climate change is warming Lake Tahoe’s cobalt-blue waters, which could complicate efforts to maintain its famed clarity, according to a scientific expert on the lake. The lake has warmed about 1 degree Fahrenheit over the past 30 years, a result of it not releasing as much heat back into the atmosphere due to carbon dioxide blanketing, said limnologist Charles Goldman. Limnology is the study of inland waters. “These are serious times, and this carbon dioxide question is just enormously serious,” he said during a presentation June 7 at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences building in Incline Village. “There is …

A Reno woman pleaded guilty Tuesday in District Court to one count of possession of heroin. Melissa Coreen Gillem entered the plea and was released on her own recognizance. Gillem, though, was allowed the OR so she could appear in Washoe County for drug, burglary and failure to appear charges. As part of the plea agreement, Gillem will apply for Drug Court, although Judge Tom Stockard did not allow for the application to be filed until her case in Washoe County is adjudicated. On April 11, Gillem was arrested by the North Central Narcotics Task Force and has been in …

The Regional Transportation Commission on Wednesday approved Sierra Nevada Construction as the low bidder, at $686,007, for Carson City street-maintenance work. The bid was more than $140,000 below the city’s estimate for slurry seal work and micro-paving at several locations. Among them are Fairview Drive from Carson Street to Edmunds Drive, King Street from Division Street to Ormsby Boulevard, Longview Drive from King Street to Ash Canyon Road, and Butti Way from Airport Road to Fifth Street. The project consists of placing about 2,882 tons of type 2 slurry seal and about 1,246 tons of type 3 micro-paving surface, as …

At least once a week, Susan Escamillo makes the 45-mile drive from Wellington to bring her grandchildren to the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada in Carson City. “It’s fantastic,” she said. “It gives the kids something to do other than watch TV or play video games.” Since its incorporation in 1988, the museum’s mission has been to give children that outlet. “It’s someplace kids can go where they’re not always told, ‘no, no, no,’” explained Lu Olsen, executive director of the Children’s Museum. “They can play. Carson City’s C Hill has a different look these days. Carson High School students or parents altered the iconic C over the weekend, coinciding with the school’s graduation. The C last was altered as a senior prank in 2010 by a group of graduating seniors dubbing themselves the “Sexy Six.” If no one cleans it up, it’s unclear who will be left footing the bill. A less than filling runoff has created a water shortage in the Lahontan Valley. At Friday’s Truckee-Carson Irrigation District Board of Director’s meeting, water flows were a hot topic. Deputy Project Manager Walt Winder encouraged Carson Division users not to waste any water as the storage levels at Lahontan Reservoir are low. 140 years ago Four men have lost their lives in four months in White Pine county. The last was the most deplorable act we have recorded. On Wednesday, a slight misunderstanding occurred between the wife of Robert W. Benefiel and the sister of William Crary during which both men were drawn into the discussion. Benefiel left and returned for his gun, which he had left inside the cabin. Crary, seeing Benefiel outside the house let loose with a double-barreled shotgun, killing him instantly. 130 years ago Robinson’s Circus is coming to town. Pressure needed to kill driver-privilege cards I have been away for awhile (one and a half years) handling personal business and was shocked to hear about Nevada lawmakers approving a legal driver’s license for illegal aliens. I couldn’t help but feel violated by this, since as an American, I am required to abide by all local, state and federal laws or face repercussions for not doing so, but illegal aliens are not being held to the same standards. They are here illegally and have been driving about illegally and are going to be rewarded. What kind of horse pucky is …

Fritsch Elementary School received five stars, the highest score available in the state’s new ranking system, according to results released Friday by the Nevada Department of Education. “I’m so happy for our staff; they’ve worked so hard,” said Principal Mary Garey. “We are a five-star school. It just gives me goose bumps every time I say it.” As of May, 37 states had received waivers to replace the school-accountability system known as Adequate Yearly Progress under the federal No Child Left Behind law, which was enacted in 2002. LAS VEGAS (AP) — Authorities are renewing accreditation for a Las Vegas psychiatric hospital at the center of patient-dumping complaints. Nevada’s chief state medical officer, Tracey Green, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that reaccreditation for Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital shows that Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services is moving in the right direction. Green says passing the review means the facility can still bill Medicare and Medicaid and remain eligible for federal funds.
