The Sheriff’s Office recommends committing to a taxi or designating a sober driver for those who are drinking. …

Carson City takes back 210 pounds of prescription drugs during April round-up

Carson City residents brought in 210 pounds of expired, unused and otherwise unneeded prescription drugs to be incinerated by the federal government during a collection day April 27. “Visualize a 210-pound man standing there, filled with pills,” said Kathy Bartosz, executive director of Partnership Carson City. “It’s mostly middle aged and senior people” bringing the drugs in. “Sometimes people end up with multiple prescriptions. They end up with a lot of surplus.” Residents brought the drugs to four Carson City-area grocery stores. Flushing the drugs is not an option; that can contaminate the water supply for humans, animals and fish. …

Spontaneous ignition started fire at Parkway Plaza Apartments

As organic matter degrades, it lets off heat. Too much heat from tightly packed organic matter, possibly dried out, with heat from the outside can lead to spontaneous ignition. The process sparked the fire that burned four units at the Parkway Plaza Apartments on Saturday morning. Fire investigators found a single ball of earthen coal at the site, still hot hours after the fire had burned. That earthen coal was the remnants of a plastic potted plant container; the potting soil had spontaneously ignited. Some types of potting soil are filled with bits of organic matter. As that matter decomposes …

LAS VEGAS — A weary-looking O.J. Simpson weighed down by shackles and more than four years in prison shuffled into a Las Vegas courtroom on Monday hoping to eventually walk out a free man. His arrival in court to ask for a new trial in the armed robbery-kidnapping case that sent him to prison in 2008 for up to 33 years could be heard before he was seen — as a loud rattling of the chains that bound his hands to his waist and restrained his feet. His lawyers had unsuccessfully argued to forego the shackles. After the 65-year-old Simpson …

A silver-colored Honda Pilot was coming to a stop at the right light at Topsy Lane and U.S. 395 when a silver-colored Honda Accord rear-ended it. The driver of a dark-colored Jeep Grand Cherokee then swerved to the right to avoid the crash and clipped the back of the Accord, Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. James Simpson said. He pleaded guilty to attempting to stealing $740 worth of goods from Walmart and told the judge he understood it was wrong. Harris’ defense attorney, Mihaela Neagos, told Judge James Wilson Jr. that the root of her client’s problems involved his being off his medications. Vandals damaged 15 golf carts and two maintenance vehicles at Empire Ranch Golf Course, leaving four of the carts on the lake on the course and two in the river. “They tore into the wall” to gain access to the carts, head golf professional Sean Boggs said. “They ripped open the panels” of corrugated steel. The cart barn is directly beneath the Empire Ranch’s main building. “They just constantly drove these things around,” Sheriff Ken Furlong said. Boggs estimated total damage at $100,000 to $150,000. The vandalism happened between 8:30 p.m. Thursday and 6 a.m. Friday. Two carts are missing, …

Students admit to possession of muriatic acid at Dayton school

Dayton Intermediate School was on lockdown for 45 minutes Thursday as the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from Central Lyon County Fire Department, the State of Nevada Fire Marshall’s Office and the United States Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms investigated suspicious materials located at the school. The materials were determined to be muriatic acid, which was to be mixed with aluminum foil to create a “works” bomb. When mixed, the result is a binary non-flammable explosion. Three students were questioned and admitted to possession of the substances but maintained that they were not going to create the reaction …

Agencies get refresher course in fireworks permits

Fire inspectors and investigators played pyrotechnician Tuesday morning, if only to shoot off a single firework each. The investigators and inspectors learned about pyrotechnics, including fireworks and lasers. Dave Ruben, Carson fire prevention captain, said it was a good refresher course since his unit doesn’t see fireworks on a consistent basis. “We want to make sure (fireworks displays) are safe for the public,” Ruben said, wearing two hats. He is also on the board of the Northern Nevada chapter of the International Organization of Arson Investigators, which sponsored the pyrotechnician to come to Carson City to teach and refresh about …

According to the plea agreement, the district attorney’s office will not seek restitution from Cook. Although Cook entered a no-contest plea, known as an Alford plea, both the prosecution and defense …

On Saturday, she started the first day of the rest of her working life, a 48-hour shift for her new employer, the Storey County Fire Department. “I’m going to jump in, I’d say, head first. I hope my experience on an ambulance and the reserves makes it a little smoother for me,” 30-year-old Larivee said. SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — The legal proceedings following the killing of Raveesh “Ravi” Kumra — a wealthy Silicon Valley venture capitalist killed in a brutal home-invasion robbery of his Monte Sereno mansion— have taken an odd twist, with a former exotic dancer asking a court for monthly support and a petition with the court seeking half his estate. Keila Goggins has asked a judge to recognize her claim that Kumra fathered her two daughters — ages 7 and 9, the San Jose Mercury News reported Saturday. Goggins, 40, told the newspaper in a telephone interview Friday from her out-of-state …
