Storm brings heavy rain, lightning

A thunderstorm raged across the region, leaving flooding and lightning caused fires in its wake.

A flash flood warning was in effect for Douglas County and Carson Valley from 3-5:15 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Floodwaters were crossing Highway 395 at Mica Drive, slowing traffic. Roads also reporting with flooding included East Valley Road and Johnson Lane. Water was ponding on roads across the Valley.

The parking lots at Carson Valley and Clear Creek plazas, along with Fuji Park and the Carson City Costco had standing water.

Waterloo and Lampe in Gardnerville experienced flooding.

Rain started over the Pine Nut Mountains at about 1:33 p.m. when a severe weather statement was issued by the Weather Service.

At around the same time a lightning strike started a fire near Sunrise Pass Road.

Repeated strikes were seen across the Pine Nuts and then spreading out over the rest of the Valley has heavy rain fell in the east Valley and then moved west.

A building suffered roof damage at Johnson Lane and Wildhorse, and a tree was blown down at the Johnson Lane General Store.

Mud was reported across the roadway at Long Drive in Sunridge, and residents reported flooding in their home. In places firefighters reported 6-12 inches of mud over the road, which serves the golf course community between Indian Hills and the Carson River.

Homes were struck by lightning on Mountain Ash and Scarlet Oak. A fire was reported near Five-Creek in the Jobs Peak subdivision.

Major flooding was reported in Fish Springs, closing Fish Springs Road. Nell Way in Fish Springs is reported to be a river with several homes cut off.

East Valley Road is covered by flood waters. Sterling Ranch Road was also blocked.

A resident manned a grader and ran up and down Stephanie clearing debris.

A line of thunderstorms stretched from Sacramento to Battle Mountain.
