Gov. Brian Sandoval’s proposal to allocate $2 million to Teach for America has new life in the Nevada Senate.
Senate Bill 517 was introduced Thursday and referred to the Senate Finance Committee, where the proposal was stalled earlier by partisan divide when it was considered as part of the governor’s K-12 education budget.
Teach for America is a national nonprofit that recruits recent college graduates and professionals to teach for at least two years in urban and rural communities. The Clark County School District has been involved in the program since 2004 and last year had 95 teachers in at-risk schools.
Democrats balked at earmarking money to a specific organization in the state budget.
Instead it was drafted as a separate bill.
