Deputy Chief Dennis Osborn will take over as chief of the Nevada Highway Patrol on Monday.
He replaces Troy Abney, who left the department in November.
Osborn has been with NHP more than 21 years, starting as a trooper in Pahrump and Indian Springs. He left NHP in 2007, spending a year with Parole and Probation as a captain.
He returned to NHP in 2008 as operations commander in Reno. He served in that capacity until 2011, when he became executive officer in the Carson City office and was promoted to deputy chief in August.
He has been commander of the southern command in Las Vegas since.
