Alpine County Historical Society seeking original art by Walt Monroe

The Alpine County Historical Society is searching for paintings by artist Walt Monroe for documentation and exhibition.

Monroe was born in Alpine County in the mining town of Monitor in 1881. A prolific artist, he painted, sketched and carved.

The society says he generally signed his work at the bottom right corner, but not always. Many locals are known to have purchased or been given art from the struggling artist from 1895 and into the 1940s.

Monroe had family ties to Alpine County, Carson City, Virginia City, Carson Valley, Mason Valley, Tonopah and Bishop, so it's likely his work may be hanging at local sites.

The society is hosting a Walt Monroe art exhibit and reception from 5 to 7 p.m. July 21. Several of his works will be on hand, but the group's main goal is to find more paintings for future events.

If you have Walt Monroe paintings or other art, contact Shannon Hickey at 775-315-0697 or Alpine County Historical Society, PO Box 517, Markleeville, Calif., 96120.
