Update: Wellington man identified as pilot of downed aircraft

1:30 p.m. Monday update: Joseph James Miceli, 59, of Wellington has been identified as the pilot of the downed aircraft, Sheriff Ken Furlong said.

The aircraft has been identified as one of several owned by Miceli, a 1946 Cessna 120.

Early information received suggested that Miceli left from Wellington in his aircraft during the afternoon hours Saturday. On Sunday, at approximately the same time as the discovery of the aircraft, Miceli was being reported missing to Lyon County authorities. It is not known at this time if Miceli ever arrived at the Carson City airport, or if he was returning to Wellington. Exact time of the crash has not been determined.

Miceli’s body was removed and transported to the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office where an autopsy will be performed.

Carson Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the crash of a small airplane in the hills east of Sierra Vista and Mexican Dam on the east side of Carson City.

Sheriff Ken Furlong said that, as of 6 p.m. Sunday, his search and rescue teams had just reached the scene of the crash and confirmed there was one body inside.

He said at this point they have no information as to the identity of the person let alone the cause of the crash. He said they don’t even know how long ago the aircraft went down.

He said assuming the victim had identification, they should be able to notify the next of kin. He said determining the cause of the crash will take longer.

The deputies were notified of the crash at 1:55 p.m. by a Sheriff’s Aero Squadron pilot who flew over what appeared to be the crash site of a small aircraft. The location of the site was identified as being several miles east of Carson City in the Pinion Hills.

A Federal Aviation Administration website indicates the plane was a fixed-wing, single-engine Cessna.

National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration officials are on scene today to investigate the crash.
