40-year-old man jailed on $1 million bail after chase
March 13, 2014
A 40-year-old man was arrested at Mountain and Spear streets Wednesday night on suspicion on four felony counts after allegedly fleeing law enforcement.
According to the man's arrest report:
Two deputies saw a vehicle going 41 mph in a 25 mph speed zone. The car, a 2007 Saturn Aura, had paper plates. A deputy asked the driver, Brian Eugene Kakowski, for his license, registration and proof of insurance, and Kakowski said the car was a rental and that he didn't have his identification with him.
A deputy smelled a marijuana odor coming from the vehicle, and Kakowski said he'd smoked a joint earlier. When asked if he had any paraphernalia, he showed the deputy a mechanical socket he said he'd used to smoke the marijuana.
Kakowski handed the deputy a job-application form and said all his personal information was listed on it. The deputy conducted a warrant search, and a dispatcher advised that there was no driver's license match for the name listed on the application.
When the deputy told Kakowski to turn his vehicle off and step out, he replied, "I can't do that," then put the car into drive and drove away quickly.
Various deputies joined in a chase for Kakowski; it later was canceled because of Kakowski's reckless and dangerous driving. A deputy said he'd seen the vehicle being driven without headlines.
A deputy then saw the car had crashed into a tree at Mountain and Spear. Kakowski was ordered at gunpoint to exit the car. A deputy found what was thought to be a handgun in Kakowski's waistband; it turned out to be a pellet gun. He also found two keys — one for the Saturn and the other for a Chevrolet. Dispatchers advised that the Saturn had been reported stolen out of Los Angeles.
Deputies found a container of marijuana in the vehicle's center console, as well as a backpack containing a Taser, night-vision goggles and a police scanner.
Kakowski was taken to the Carson City Jail at 10:35 p.m., where law enforcement learned his real identity. They also learned of his first-degree robbery warrant out of Riverside Superior Court, with bail set at $1 million.
Kakowski was arrested on the felony robbery warrant, as well as on suspicion of felony eluding, felony possession of a stolen vehicle, felony ex-felon in possession of a stun gun, basic speeding (16-20 mph over), possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana and headlights required. Total bail was set at $1,045,000.
