Woodbury files to seek DA’s post

Jason Woodbury formally filed to run for Carson City district attorney Friday.

He will face Assistant District Attorney Mark Kreuger, who filed earlier in the week.

Woodbury is making his first run for public office. He has been a Carson City lawyer since 1998, in private practice for the past 11 years and as a deputy in the Carson DA’s office before that.

“The best thing we can do to help victims of crime in this community is to provide a high level of service and a standard of professionalism second to none,” he said.

He said the campaign is an opportunity to show voters the kind of public officer he would be.

Both men are seeking the job being vacated by Neil Rombardo, who has announced he won’t seek a third term.

As of Friday, there are now three opponents seeking to derail Ken Furlong’s bid for a fourth term as sheriff — two of them current employees of the department.

Daniel Gonzales, a sergeant, and Don Gibson, a veteran deputy, both filed Friday. In addition, Lorne Houle, a Marine Corps veteran, has filed.

Sue Merriwether, chief deputy to Clerk/Recorder Alan Glover, has filed for the Glover’s post. Glover is retiring at the end of this year.

Merriwether has 17 years of experience in the Clerk/Recorder’s Office and has been a Carson City resident for nearly four decades.

“I’ve seen what Alan does on a daily basis and I know how this office works,” she said. “I’m ready to take this next step in making sure the Clerk/Recorder’s Office continues to run smoothly.”

Merriwether was unopposed as of Friday.

Halfway through the filing period, several Carson City incumbents were unopposed. They include Assessor Dave Dawley and Treasurer Al Kramer.

Jim Bathgate is challenging School Trustee Ron Swirczek’s bid for another term in School Trustee District 3.

In addition, as of Friday, no one had filed to run for the District 6 school board trustee’s post.

Filing runs through next Friday.
