Film series ends tonight with an epic flick
October 31, 2013
CAC's fall film series, "Big Screen Epics," will conclude tonight with a screening of "Once Upon A Time in America."
The 1984 film was directed by Sergio Leone and stars Robert De Niro, James Woods, Joe Pesci, Elizabeth McGovern and Tuesday Weld. It is a sprawling tale of a group of Jewish gangsters in New York spanning more than three decades.
Tickets are $7 for CAC members and $10 nonmembers, and they will be available in the Art Center's bar beginning at 6 p.m. and the film will begin at 7 p.m.
The Portland Cello Project will be bringing "Bach to Brubeck and Beck" to the Art Center on Nov. 16. The ensemble brings new and high energy meanings to the ideas of an Indie Orchestra. They perform works by Bach as well as an eclectic array of musics, giving classical music a high energy jolt and also bringing new and unexpected works into their repertoire.
These range from the classic jazz tune, "Take Five," written by Paul Desmond for the Dave Brubeck Quartet to works by Kanye West, Pantera and Radiohead.
Since their inception in 2007, the Portland Cello Project has performed in venues across the country from Prairie Home Companion and on NPR to a variety of arts centers and rock clubs. Their repertoire is now comprised of more than 800 works, may of which you'd never expect to hear coming out of a cello. And, they often incorporate vocalists, horns and several percussionists.
While no two shows are alike, their ever-changing repertoire promises to be a real musical treat for classical music aficionados as well as jazz and rock music lovers.
The group will conduct a free and open to the public conversation on their musical influences, styles and all-inclusive aesthetic at 3 p.m. on Nov 16. These popular outreach discussions provide an opportunity for audiences to talk with the artists in an informal, up close and personal environment.
The conversation and performance by the Portland Cello Project has been supported, in part, by TourWest, a program of the Western States Arts Federation.
Doors for the show will open at 7.pm.. There will be a no-host Art Bar and the performance will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are $17 for CAC members, $20 for non-members, and are now available at Jeff's Copy Express, ITT @ NAS Fallon or by calling CAC at 774-423-1440.
