Wave sweeps Devils
April 16, 2013
Rileigh Ricken donated to her own cause on Wednesday.
The junior pitcher allowed two runs, but chipped in with four RBIs, as the Lady Wave rolled to an 8-2 Lahontan League win at Dayton.
Fallon hosted the Dust Devils Thursday in a doubleheader and play today and Saturday at the Reed tournament.
With the win, Fallon improves to 11-5 overall and 5-0 in league play. Dayton falls to 7-9, 1-7. Thursday’s results were not available at press time.
Ricken blasted a home run and a double, while Cady Cordes added a triple and Paige Thorn had an RBI. On the basepaths, Kaysee Archer, Gabby Sharpe and Ali Tedford combined for five stolen bases.
Ricken went the distance and recorded nine strikeouts, two walks and four hits. Her counterpart, Makayla Shadle, fanned 14 Fallon hitters and walked seven.
Fallon, though, tagged Shadle for two runs in the second and third innings for a 4-0 lead. The Lady Wave added one in the sixth, but the Dust Devils countered with two in the bottom of the inning. Fallon iced the game with three runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Shadle also went 1-for-3 at the plate with a double and an RBI. Kalee Alexander and Clarice Cerda also tallied doubles for Dayton.
Baseball holds off Dayton
On the baseball diamond, Fallon escaped with an 8-7 win at Dayton on Wednesday.
Fallon led 8-3 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Dust Devils tallied four runs, aided by a walk and hit batter. Dayton scored its four runs with no outs, but Nic Stenberg came in relief of Morgan Dirickson and closed the game to preserve the win. Fallon starting pitcher Hunter Mori went 5 1/3 innings.
Stenberg, though, forced two fly ball outs to right field and a groundout to shortstop to end the game.
“Next thing you know, Dayton puts four runs on the board with no outs,” Fallon coach Lester de Braga said. “A little hair raising there for a little bit.”
Tristen Salazar executed a squeeze bunt in the top of the seventh inning to give the Greenwave an 8-3 lead.
“We came out and swung the bats well,” de Braga said. “I think, hopefully, this will build some character with holding on for a win like that.”
With the win, Fallon improves to 9-8 overall, 5-0 in the Lahontan League and 3-4 in the Northern Division I-A. Dayton falls to 6-11, 3-3, 1-6 in the Northern DI-A.
The teams resume play with a doubleheader at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Ed Arciniega Complex.
