Merkley nabs All-American honor, takes seventh

Colin Merkley is officially an All-American wrestler.

The 2009 Fallon grad went 2-1 in the first day of the Wrestling National Championship at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka, Kan., and placed seventh in the 149-pound weight class.

Merkley, a junior from Embry-Riddle, won his first match after being dropped into the consolation bracket, wrestled Saturday morning. He lost his first bout, but followed up with a victory for seventh place.

The third session of the 57th annual event will start Saturday at 8 a.m. CST. The championship finals are scheduled for 5 p.m.

Merkley opened the tournament with a 7-2 win over Oklahoma City’s Ricky McCarty to advance to the quarterfinal. Merkley, though, lost a close 4-2 battle to Morningside’s Tyler Lashbrook.

The ex-Greenwave state champ rebounded with a 7-1 win over Northwestern’s John Lynch in the consolation’s fourth round.
