UNR offers career courses next month

Professional development courses offered by Extended Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno provide University-quality educational opportunities to build your career and skills in a wide range of management and business topics, to keep on the leading edge of the latest trends and industry-specific issues, and to hone existing talents for career advancement.

The following noncredit courses may be taken independently and require no formal admission to the University; many may also be applied to full 10-course management certificates. Courses are offered on the main campus at the University of Nevada, Reno, or at the University’s Redfield Campus in south Reno unless noted otherwise.

Select courses as noted have been approved or are pending approval for recertification credit hours toward PHR, SPHR or GPHR (Professional, Senior Professional or Global Professional in Human Resources) recertification through the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI). The following individual short courses are offered June-August:

July 9

“Microsoft Excel Basics” — This one-session computer skills course covers Microsoft Excel 2010 essentials, offered by Extended Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno. Held Tuesday, July 9, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the University’s Redfield Campus, 18600 Wedge Parkway, Reno. Course fee: $100, includes parking. Instr.: Jean Gage. July 11

“Facilitating the Perfect Meeting” — This one-session professional development course provides the skills and tools necessary to facilitate well-planned and efficient meetings that achieve a clearly defined purpose, offered by Extended Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno. Held Thursday, July 11, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. at the University’s Redfield Campus, 18600 Wedge Parkway, Reno. Course fee: $210, includes parking and lunch. Instr.: Ileana Vassiliou, MBA.

“Microsoft Word Basics” — This one-session computer skills course covers Microsoft Word 2010 essentials of word processing, offered by Extended Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno. July 15-18

“Management of Slot Operations” — This four-session gaming management course gives you the skills to run your slot operation more efficiently for long-term profitability and growth, offered by Extended Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno. Held Monday-Thursday, July 15-18 at the University’s Continuing Education Building, 1041 N. Virginia St., Reno. Course fee: $2,600, includes course materials, orientation breakfast, four lunches, refreshment breaks and group awards dinner.

July 16-25 (registration discount available through July 2)

“Project Management Essentials” — This six-session project management course builds a solid foundation for successful project management, offered by Extended Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno. Held Tuesday-Thursday, July 16-25, 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the University’s Redfield Campus, 18600 Wedge Parkway, Reno. Course fee: $585 through July 2; $695 after Tuesday, includes course materials, refreshment breaks and parking. Instr.: William Ball, MBA, PMP.

July 18-19

“Conducting an Effective Workplace Investigation” - This advanced two-session senior HR professional development course provides skills to conduct prompt, fair and thorough investigations, make sound decisions and minimize legal risks, offered by Extended Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno. Held Thursday-Friday, July 18-19, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the University’s Redfield Campus, 18600 Wedge Parkway, Reno. Course fee: $500, includes parking, lunch each day and 12 PHR/SPHR/GPHR recertification hours. Instr.: Molly Rezac, J.D.

July 29-Aug. 1

“Nevada Municipal and County Clerks Academy” — Designed by the University of Nevada, Reno in partnership with the Nevada State Municipal Clerks Association, this four-session professional development program provides training and development in management, accounting, legislative issues, communication and leadership for municipal, county and deputy clerks, recorders, city secretaries, legislative administrators and other elected and appointed officials, offered by Extended Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno. Held July 29-Aug. 1 (Monday-Wednesday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Thursday, 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m.), at the University’s Continuing Education Building, 1041 N. Virginia St., Reno. Course fee: $600, includes continental breakfast, lunch, refreshment breaks and parking each day.
