Fallon examines projects Development Block Grant

City Council members met for their first regularly scheduled meeting of December on Tuesday to discuss and approve several items.

City Engineer Jim Souba discussed two possible projects for the Development Block Grant. He opened the discussion with possible upgrades for the community pool. Souba said the pool would become ADA compliant with a ramp up to the pool deck and a lift that allows a person to get into the pool. There would also be some structural repairs including the basement. The second suggestion was for sidewalk repairs and installations on the southeast side of town. Souba said there are areas in town that do not have sidewalks in front of homes and on the opposite side of the street houses have them.

“This block grant would be a great opportunity for our city and help out with improvements that need to be taken care of,” Souba said. “We’d like to get community members to come to the meeting and present their ideas to us if they have any.”

Souba said these items are not definite and will be discussed further at one final public meeting before the proposals are submitted on Jan. 7.

Other items approved or discussed include the following:

Approved The Wok off premise liquor license.

Approved Community Development Block Grant review and summary of past performances.

Approved resolution 13-19 record of authorized regulatory traffic control devices within city limits.

Presented Employee of the Quarter to Doni Kowalski, police service assistant for the Fallon Police Department. Kowalski is the department’s evidence custodian and handles much of the counter work. She logs evidence, handles bad check restitution and does much of the department’s behind-the-scenes work. Kowalski has worked for the city since 2003.
